Born County Antrim, Ireland, one of nine children of Allison and Elizabeth (Wilson) Stewart.
Learned shoemaker's trade.
Emigrated to America 1832, landing at Quebec during the cholera scare.
Lived in New York City, then Washington County, Penn.
(1837) where he owned a shoe store.
Married 1841.
Moved to Muskingum County, Ohio 1864, farming near New Concord, later living in the town of New Concord until 1887 when he went with his son to Kansas and died the same year.
Reformed Presbyterian.
