Early Iowa settler who, with his wife, began pioneer life in Iowa.
Enlisted 1861 as a lieutenant in Company B, Fifth Iowa Cavalry, at the three-years call.
Killed in action Aug 26, 1862 during the cavalry charge at Cumberland Iron Works (near Fort Donelson), under Colonel W. W. Lowe, after being ordered to charge the enemy battery.
His only child was a daughter who became Mrs. I. J. Swain.
