Native of Norway.
Came to America in 1854, located in Chicago (shingle mill and pinery) until 1858, then settled in Cherry Grove township, Goodhue County, purchasing 120 acres and later farming 300 acres (general farming, dairying, stock raising).
Married Gertrude Maria Skaar in Nov. 1862.
