At age two came to Jefferson County, Wisconsin, with his parents William and Eva (Smith) Bond, and grew up and farmed there on rented land.
Served in the Union army during the Civil War.
In 1875 brought his family to Mound Prairie township, Jasper County, Iowa, where he homesteaded a farm.
Wife Frances Bartholomew was born in Wisconsin.
