Came to Ohio in 1830, located at Urbana in the drug business with his uncle Dr. Joseph S. Carter.
Married 1832 and moved to Mechanicsburg (mercantile business with Dr. Obed Horr) until 1837.
Bought a farm on Buck creek, farmed until 1851, then returned to Urbana where he resided until his death.
Helped raise the 66th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War, rose from captain to commissary of subsistence of volunteers, present at Lee's surrender at Appomattox, mustered out with brevet title of major.
Appointed by President Grant as U.S. consul at Nuremberg, Bavaria, residing there three years.
Ardent Republican.
Served in both the House and Senate of the Ohio Legislature.
Director of the Atlantic & Great Western Railroad.
Methodist.
Abolitionist active in the Underground Railroad and the 'Greene county rescue case.' Married Lavina Talbot in 1832.
Nine children.
