Son of James Alexander Calhoun (Scotch-Irish descent).
Taught school and clerked in a store in early life.
Lived for a time in Wheeling, West Virginia.
Came west in 1874 to northern Appanoose county, Iowa.
Moved to Avery, Monroe county, in 1892.
Died there October 25, 1894.
Covenanter in faith, Jacksonian Democrat, held office in Ohio.
Seven children.
Matthew died an adult, Lee died in childhood.
Daughter Mary J. married a Kingery of Brighton, Iowa.
