Founder in 1891 of the Western Knitting Mills (originally Western Knitting Company) of Rochester, manufacturers of men's goods.
The chief manufactory of Rochester.
A New Englander, born in Proctorsville, Vermont, 1864.
At age sixteen began as a clerk in a clothing store at Ludlow, Vermont.
Later worked for Jordan, Marsh & Company, wholesale dry-goods dealers in Boston, Massachusetts.
When his parents removed to Michigan he accompanied them, and in Detroit was engaged with Edson, Moore & Company for ten years.
President of the company until his death on May 5, 1912.
Succeeded in the presidency by W. H. Yankey.
His son William C. Chapman was treasurer and general manager of the firm.
