A mason by trade.
Emigrated to the United States when young, locating in Sterling, Illinois in 1850.
Worked on construction of the Northwestern railroad through Illinois to Clinton, Iowa.
Built the Gault House in Sterling.
Moved to Geneva, Illinois, then became foreman of masons at Batavia, Illinois.
In 1870 fell from a swinging scaffold, dislocating his spine and causing total paralysis, resulting in his death in 1874.
Children Edward and Helen died in childhood.
