Born December 18, 1850 in Hanover, Germany.
Emigrated to the United States in 1870 with only three dollars.
Came to Jones County, Iowa and worked four years for Peter Schwartz, then farmed as a tenant.
In 1888 bought the 120-acre Hugh McCain place on section 31, Scotch Grove township.
Added 40 acres in 1891 and 80 acres in Wayne township in 1902.
Prosperous farmer.
Member of the German Lutheran church.
Republican.
Married Mary Otten June 25, 1886.
