Removed from Ohio to Washington County, Iowa in 1846 (Dutch Creek Prairie, by boat Cincinnati to Keokuk).
Later Jefferson County (1858), Jasper County (1860), then Madison County (1863, settling in Crawford).
Died May 1867 in Jasper County.
Prominent early Methodist Episcopal churchman, Sunday-school worker, justice of the peace, abolitionist.
Built the Smedley mill on Skunk River near Brighton.
Three sons enlisted in the Civil War.
