Enlisted for the Mexican War at age 18 as a drummer boy, later carrying a musket under Gen. Winfield Scott.
Afterward went to Iowa on a soldier's land warrant and entered 160 acres, then returned and in the early 1850s settled on a 134-acre farm in Rice Township.
Republican, served as township clerk.
Left fatherless in boyhood.
Deceased at time of writing ('the late Grant Forgerson').
