Of old Virginia stock and Scotch-Irish extraction.
Born in Virginia, possibly about 1798.
An officer (captain) in the War of 1812, entrusted with escorting British prisoners to Chillicothe from the frontier, during which trip he first met his future wife Nancy Winship.
Married about 1817 and settled in Pickaway County.
NOTE: distinct from his son William Gill (b.1832).
