Born Oct. 21, 1808 in Jefferson Co., Ohio.
Seventh of twelve children.
Of Scotch descent (Hayes and McCoy lines).
Married Jane McElroy Aug. 25, 1835.
Came to Guilford Township, Medina Co., Dec. 1838, bought and cleared 40 acres, remained 15 years, then moved to Westfield Township and purchased 60 acres (settled by A. King) for life.
All six children died young: William J. at 16 months.
Thomas at age 9.
Mary at age 6.
Alice young (three of these died of scarlet fever in May 1847 within three weeks).
Lawrence young.
Alice M. was wife of Richard Hogan and died 1866, leaving a five-week-old son Lawrence.
Formerly Whig then Abolitionist, later Republican.
