Brought to Iowa by her parents in 1839, family locating in Dubuque County then Linn County the following year.
Father a farmer who died when she was sixteen.
Mother died when she was four and a half.
Paternal grandfather served seven years as an army surgeon in the Revolutionary War.
Sister Mrs. Barber resided in Central City.
Married Mr. Gillilan in 1851.
Thirteen children born, two died in early childhood, eleven living.
Son Jake L. was a Spanish-American War soldier who re-enlisted in the 36th Regiment Regular Army (Philippines).
Son Oscar R. a Cornell College graduate and school principal at Center Junction, Iowa.
