Native of Virginia, raised in Tennessee, spent several years in Mississippi and Alabama.
Came to Marion County, Illinois about April 22, 1840, purchased 400 acres of wild land in what is now Stevenson township.
Successful farmer, joined the Christian church.
Died March 10, 1863.
Twice married: first wife Nancy Dukes (married in Mississippi), who died leaving one child, William H. Jr.
Married Mary Crane April 22, 1840, and they had eleven children.
