Native of Berlin, Pennsylvania.
Began medical studies at 18 under Dr. Cooper of Johnstown, PA, then a three-year course at a Philadelphia medical college.
Practiced in Pennsylvania and Ohio before settling at West Point, Lee County, Iowa in 1845 at about 39 years of age (birth year estimated ~1806).
Later grew grapes with one of the finest vineyards in southeastern Iowa.
He and his family were Catholic.
