Born June 19, 1812 in Boylston, Worcester Co., Mass.
Came to Ohio in 1817 with his father, locating in Athens County.
Whig then Republican.
Deputy County Surveyor (1836), County Surveyor, County Auditor (1846) until 1858.
Collector of Internal Revenue for the Fifteenth District of Ohio (removed under Andrew Johnson).
Director then president of the Athens branch of the State Bank, oversaw its conversion to the National Bank of Athens.
Railroad promoter.
Elected to Congress in 1868.
Married Amy Barker.
Of their four children only one (son David) living at writing.
