Grandson of David C. Orvis (Revolutionary soldier/officer).
Civil War veteran, enlisted Nov 1861 in First Wisconsin Cavalry, re-enlisted 1864, commanding sergeant detailed to help capture Jefferson Davis.
Discharged July 1865.
Farmer in Richmond Township until 1888, then Sanborn homestead.
Later retired at Spring Grove.
Married (first) Lavina Sanborn at Wilmot, Wis., Nov 4, 1866.
Son Clarence C. an attorney of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Daughter Rose married James Madden.
Son Frank killed 1909 on railroad at Shermerville, Ill.
