Emigrated to America 1854 with his brother William (now deceased), sailing on the vessel 'Albert' from Bremen to New Orleans, then up the Mississippi to Fort Madison.
Joined the Atlee saw and lumber mill when established in 1855 and was connected with it 47 years, latterly foreman of the machinery department.
Lost three fingers from left hand and one from right hand at the saw.
Now retired.
Owns a 235-acre farm in Cedar township, a home at 1904 Division St., ten acres in Madison township, and three tenement houses and four lots on block No. 8 in Fort Madison.
Member of the Old Settlers' Association.
Family in Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Married Lizzie Jaeger 1857.
Parents of ten children, six living.
