Early settler of Makee Township, Allamakee County, Iowa (arrived by 1851).
Opened a small stock of goods in a log cabin, then built a hotel on his claim (later the McCroden place) on the main road for settlers landing at Lansing.
First postmaster of Makee, postoffice established at his house ~1852.
Served until he sold out in 1856 and removed to Minnesota.
Died at Monticello, Minnesota, July 1893, aged 75 (birth year ~1818 inferred).
Raised sod corn, buckwheat and wheat in 1851.
Hersey Pratt and brothers (mail carriers to/from Lansing, Civil War veterans) appear to be his sons.
