Followed coal mining until 1832 when he immigrated with his family to America (55-day sailing voyage, disembarked at New Orleans).
Lived in Cincinnati, Wellsville (Columbiana County), then Stark County (16 years), came to Williams County, Ohio in 1848, securing 20 acres of wild land in section 14, Springfield township, later 160 acres and an adjoining 80.
