Pioneer of Wayne County, Iowa.
Born Dryden, Tompkins Co. NY July 5, 1823.
Moved as a child to Auburn, Cayuga Co. NY, then Hillsdale Co., Michigan.
Farmer, then merchant in Hillsdale ~6 yrs.
Came to Iowa 1854, entered section 19, Walnut Township, Wayne County.
Settled 1855 on NW quarter.
Also entered 260 acres in Jackson Township (420-acre farm).
Two sons died in infancy.
Herbert A. lived in New Mexico, Frank M. in Jackson Township.
Democrat.
Represented Wayne County in State Legislature 1857.
Helped establish Des Moines-St. John, MO mail route.
Postoffice at Kniffin kept at his house 16 yrs.
