Indiana was Northwest Territory frontier during the Revolution, its future carried by George Rogers Clark’s 1779 capture of Vincennes from the British. In the decades after independence, Revolutionary veterans and their sons pressed west into the Wabash country on bounty and purchase land.
Bounty land and the westward push
The young United States paid many Continental soldiers in western land warrants, and those bounties — together with cheap frontier land — drew the Revolutionary generation and their children westward in the early 1800s. Following a family back through that migration often ends at a Revolutionary soldier.
