Those five codes are the book's own legend, printed at the front of each volume. Ranks are printed short too: PVT. for private, CPL. or CORP. for corporal, SGT. for sergeant, LT. for lieutenant, CAPT. for captain, MAJ. for major, WAGR. for wagoner, MECH. for mechanic, BUGL. for bugler and MUSC. for musician. A few captions carry other titles; we show every one exactly as the book printed it.

How we made this list: the names, hometowns and codes were read from the scanned captions by machine, then the doubtful ones were checked by eye against the page. Each portrait shows the caption as the book printed it, so if our typed name and the picture ever disagree, trust the picture. Spellings are the book's own, even where a town or name looks misspelled.
