The McDowell Family of Johnson County, Iowa

From Ashland County, Ohio, to Big Grove Township and the county auditor's office · 4 people named in the record

Henry McDowell, born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, in 1811, grew up in Ashland County, Ohio, and married Margaret Hayden there on June 15, 1837. In 1842 they came to Johnson County with their infant son Arthur and Margaret's father, Miles Hayden, and settled on Section 26 in what became Big Grove Township. Henry was elected county commissioner in August 1847 and took every one of the seventeen votes cast in Cedar Township, and he served as township clerk and trustee by turns for sixteen years. Their son Arthur served in Company D of the 44th Iowa, kept a drug business at Solon, and was twice elected county auditor as a Republican. Margaret died May 5, 1882, and Henry then made his home with Arthur in Iowa City. The scanned 1883 history prints the name as Medowell, and once as Mcdowell. Every fact below is cited to a public-domain Johnson County history.
