There were six children born to them, three sons ann three daughters, three of whom are now living: William C.; Mary II., wife of Rev. Andrew Pitchie, of Wyoming, Ohio; and Jonathan F. The father of our subject was a farmer and came to Ohio about 1807 with his parents. His father bought the farm where our subject now lives from the Government, cleared and improved the same, and partly reared his family there. The father of our subject also here lived and reared his family and died in 1871, at the age of seventy-eight years. His wife survived him about nine years. They were formerly members of the United Presbyterian Church, but at the time of their death belonged to the Presbyterian denomination.

The paternal grandfather of our subject, Robert Gray, was a native of Ireland, born in 1744, and came to America in 1763, locating in Pennsylvania. He served under General Putnam in the militia, and afterwards in the regulars at Sandy Hook in the Revolutionary War. He also served under General Watts in Capt. Jonathan’s company, and subsequently received his discharge from General Putnam. Afterward lie settled in Pennsylvania, where he married Agnes Grajq who was born in Pennsylvania in 1753, and died in Fairfield Township in 1831. He was a school teacher, and taught while his boys managed the home farm. He had eleven children. The maternal grandfather of our subject was Alexander Woods, a wheelwright and farmer and a native of Ireland. He came to Ohio about 1800, and settled in Warren County, where he died in 1844.

Jonathan F. Gray", the subject of this sketch, was born and reared on the farm where he now lives, which has always been his home. He received a good common-school education and attended Farmers’ College at College Hill. He then returned to the farm and has always been engaged in agriculture. He has seventy-eight acres and manager his affairs with good judgment. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and is not a partisan politically, but affiliates with the Republican party. He has lived for fifty-two years on the same farm and been identified with whatever was of interest to the community in which his lot has been cast.
