Enlisted as a private in the 112th Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
Lost an arm during the siege of Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1864 and was honorably discharged.
Entered the hotel business at Prairie City, Iowa, in 1865 for about twenty years, then became county auditor of Jasper County.
Father of seven children, three living at time of writing.
