Born Oct. 4, 1815 in the kingdom of Bavaria, on the river Rhine.
Learned the baker's trade.
Emigrated to the US in 1846, settling in Rochester, NY.
Later a baker and miller: Prairie du Chien WI (bakery to 1854), McGregor IA (built the fifth house in town), White Springs Brewery, Smithfield flouring mills (1860), Eagle mills near Decorah (1865), Riceford mill in Houston County MN, mills at Newburg and Chaska MN, and the Evergreen flour mill at Fort Atkinson, Winneshiek County.
Retired ~15 years later, selling to sons George and Anthony.
Died 1886.
