Educated in home schools, worked five years as clerk in a clothing house from age 17, then farmed in Jasper County eight years.
In 1908 became general manager of Fred Roberts' general store in Reasnor.
Store later sold to F. J. Coffee, with whom he remained while living on his farm near Reasnor.
Married Nellie D. Sipe on November 17, 1899.
Mason (Fairview Lodge No. 197, Monroe) and Woodmen of the World (Reasnor).
Held township offices, ran for trustee of Palo Alto township.
Siblings included a brother 'Custer' (merchant at Monroe) and Grace, who married W. H. Roman.
