Fifth of ten children.
Learned blacksmith's trade.
Came to Clarke County, Iowa in 1860, settling on section 4, Osceola Township, on the Knoxville Road.
Enlisted July 1861 in Company F, Sixth Iowa Infantry.
Served at siege of Vicksburg, Jackson, Mission Ridge and Lookout Mountain.
Later Battery D, Fourth Missouri Artillery.
Head blacksmith Fourth Division.
Discharged Davenport, Iowa, July 1864.
Prosperous farmer and stock-raiser owning 400 acres.
First wife Lydia A. Boadle died age 24.
Married second wife Sarah A. Carnahan in 1859.
