Rented and operated mills in Dunkard Township, Greene Co., Pa. and Monongahela County before coming to Iowa.
Visited Washington County July 1845, bought 120 acres, and moved his family from Pennsylvania to Iowa in spring 1846, settling near Wassonville.
Later served at Richmond as County Supervisor, Justice of the Peace and Township Trustee (from spring 1863).
Ran a hotel at Sigourney.
By 1875 held a half-interest in the Mendona (formerly Hewett) mill on English River, section 8, Lime Creek Township.
Son Thomas C. served in the 30th Iowa Vol.
Inf. and died in the service.
Son Cyrus B. served in Co. E, 30th Iowa, later hotel-keeper in Woolsey, Dak.
His father died in a Pennsylvania/Virginia county about 1850 and his mother died in 1851.
His parents (surname Mapel) had fourteen children including siblings Benjamin, Rebecca (wife of Rev. Edward E. Parish), Stephen, Nancy, Sarah (wife of E. Maguire), Simon L., Thomas, Elizabeth (wife of G. M. Ray), Joseph, Lydia (widow of George Kener), Lewis, Andrew J., and Maria.
