Father died when he was two years old, leaving mother a widow with three sons and two daughters.
W. J. was the youngest.
Apprenticed to a cabinet-maker.
Married Rachel E. Kearan (native of Guernsey County) in 1846.
Two children, Hannah M. (wife of Michael Eshman of Omaha) and Sarah J. (deceased, wife of George H. Doughty).
Rachel died Feb 1852.
Went to California in 1852 via ox-team, mining/carpentry in Jacksonville, Sacramento, and Nevada.
Married Mary C. Whelan (native of Ohio) in fall 1856.
Salt manufacturer and farmer in Ohio for eight years.
Came to Shelby County, Iowa in 1869, purchasing 320 acres in Galland's Grove and prairie.
Later traded for a mill in Panama.
In fall 1888 moved near Dunlap.
Parents of seven children, six surviving.
Methodist Episcopal.

Former Whig, then Republican.
