The Smith Families of Johnson County, Iowa

Four separate households from England, Vermont and Ohio, and other Smiths named in the county histories · 9 people named in the record

The 1883 History of Johnson County sketches four Smith households, and it never says that any of them were related, so each is kept apart here. Two came from England by the same road: James and Sarah A. Smith lived in Philadelphia and Salem, Ohio, before settling in Graham Township in 1853, and Z. Smith, who married Anna Harrison in Philadelphia in 1850, followed the same route to Graham Township in November 1854. Robert A. Smith of Bennington County, Vermont, settled on open prairie in Section 4 of Fremont Township in the fall of 1856 and built up a 160-acre farm near Lone Tree. In Iowa City lived Mrs. Susan F. Smith, born in Pike County, Ohio, in 1823, the eldest daughter of Governor Lucas by his second wife, who married Dr. William L. Smith of Baltimore at Muscatine in 1842. The books name several other Smiths in passing, and a few are listed at the end. Every fact below is cited to a public-domain Johnson County history.
