About the images

Every historical photograph and book page on HeartlandAncestry is in the public domain in the United States. Below is each one, where it came from, and the reason it is free to use.

We use three kinds: photographs made by the United States government (for example the Farm Security Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey), photographs published in the United States before 1931, whose copyright has expired, and a few older unpublished photographs whose copyright term has run out. We link the original catalog record for each so you can see the full-size image and its history. We do not retouch the photographs. We resize them, and some are trimmed: a film border, the margins of a book page around a plate, or a wide panorama cut down to one section of the view.

Our own writing, maps, and page design are © HeartlandAncestry. If you believe an image is listed in error, email [email protected] and we will look at it right away.
